The LTV Steel - Erie Mining Co. Alco Page

This is dedicated to all of the hard working folks and their families up on the Iron Range who lost their jobs at the Hoyt Lakes, MN LTV plant when it closed in 2001.  From railfans around the globe, thanks for the memories!

The whole Alco fleet is up for sale! Click here for a full photo roster of the units and contact details.

Current [July 2002] photos!

Even more current photos [July 17th 2003] of the RS11 move from LTV to M&E

New photos from the recent moving of locos! These two shots are from Kent Rengo who worked the LSRM GP30 that switched up at the plant at the end of June to retireve their F9 4211. RS11 7209 was being prepared to get fired up that day...

A trio of the RS11 units that keep the ore moving behind the scenes, seen here at the "Super Pocket".

The final taconite train to the plant with an RS11 and C420 in charge, January 4, 2001. Thanks to Doug Buell for this shot, he was the only one to capture this historic last train.

This winter [early 2001] the line had to be cleared and none of than a pair of the RS11s got to handle this duty. Here they are shoving their plow along the line preparing it for the final season.

This following collection is from Doug Buell - the authority on LTV-Eire Mining! Thanks for the views from the inside Doug!

RS11 7209 idles away...

RS11 7216 in rare LTV paint

One of just three C420s on the roster, 7222 leads a train inside the plant area

7201 - their second RS11 (7200 was in a wreck in the 1990s and this unit took over the lowset number RS11 spot)

Road King 7230, the lone C424 on the the Erie roster.

7201 again, with an ex-BN RS11. Note the size on the dump truck up on the hill compared to the Alcos!

And C420 7222 hauls dump cars with a bit of that classic smoke

7220 (ALCO C420) with nine loaded ore cars at the Area 2 Loading Pocket

A better roster shot of the 7230 (ALCO C424).

And even though these aren't Alcos, most will agree this set of F units is a great site, they even have Alco smoke.  Here they are on the very last run on the line. This was a curtain call for the final taconite train that ran earlier this year with the same lashup [this train was full of chips, a.k.a. broken pellets].  The rest of the 2001 season was covered by leased GE six axle units for the most part. Today the Alcos, Baldwins, and EMDs all sit jobless at they Hoyt Lakes, Minn. plant waiting for new owners.
